The “Sustainable Livelihoods Through Corn Production” project, carried out by Youth and the Future and GIZ, aims to support vulnerable people of Bafut, empower women, and increase farmer income by 20% at the end of one year.
For this farming season, we have planted 10 hectares in the Njibeeh and Mfotaa’s community.
With GIZ support, we trained young people to prepare the land and harvest corn using high-yield varieties and climate-smart methods. We will also support farmers with storage to reduce post-harvest losses from 40% to 5% or less.
The training provided by GIZ to young people and women from vulnerable families includes:
- Production of corn: soil testing, proper spacing, fertiliser use, pest and disease control
- Storage: Modern drying, hermetic bags, silo management, moisture control
- Marketing: Collective selling and value addition to increase the price for farmers
